Theme from Chapter 1
One theme from Chapter 1 may be that you can't teach an old dog new tricks or that people do not change easily. Although, Widow Douglas and Miss Watson want to help Huck change his life and civilize him, he does not like their way of life. He is used to having his freedom and in the house he feels sad and alone. He seems to feel better in Chapter 2 when he is out at night with his friend Tom Sawyer.
Theme from Chapter 2
A possible theme from Chapter 2 could be that superstitious people can be easily fooled. Jim believes that witches possessed him and made him walk around the state when he finds his hat on a tree branch above his head. Tom Sawyer was actually the one who moved Jim's hat when he was sleeping. Jim tells his story to other slaves and builds a reputation for knowing about witches, which they all seem to believe exist.
