Characters from Chapters 1 & 2
Huckleberry Finn (Huck)
Huck is the narrator and main character of the story. He has recently been adopted by the Widow Douglas and is not sure that he fits into a civilized life with her. He is used to being on his own and surviving in nature. He decided to stay in town so that he can be in a gang of robbers with other boys from town, especially his good friend, Tom Sawyer.
Jim
Jim is a slave owned by Miss Watson. He hears the boys in the woods at night but doesn't know it is them. He falls asleep waiting to find out who is out there and Tom plays a trick on Jim. Jim is a superstitious person and believes that Tom's trick was actually witches possessing him and moving his hat onto a tree branch as a sign that they were there.
Tom Sawyer
Tom is Huck's friend and is always looking for adventure. He has read many books and wants to try out the ideas he has read about. He likes to have fun by playing tricks and being the leader of the boy's gang of robbers.
Widow Douglas
Widow Douglas adopted Huck and is trying to civilize him. She gives him new, clean clothes and helps him with reading and writing. She believes in god and tries to teach him about the bible.
Miss Watson
Miss Watson, Widow Douglas' sister, tries to teach Huck bible stories. Huck does not think that he wants to go to heaven since Miss Watson told him that his friend, Tom Sawyer, will not be there (implying that he will be going to hell instead).
Judge Thatcher
Judge Thatcher is a minor character who helps Huck by taking care of his gold and investing it for him. Huck gets some of his money each week from Judge Thatcher.
